Wyoming Area High School Science Olympiad Team garnered second place from a field of 31 teams in the C-Division of the Northeast Regional Competition of the Pennsylvania Science Olympiad held at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus. The team will move on to the State Science Olympiad Competition at Juniata College on April 29. The team competed in 23 individual events and captured two gold medals, two silver medals, four bronze medals and four fourth-place medals. Individual medalists were: Maria Marianacci and Leslie Shumlas, first place, anatomy and physiology; Leslie Shumlas and Stormy Ruiz, first place, fossils; Eric Werbin and Alyssa Cajka, second place, microbe mission; Samantha Scott and Tia Spagnuolo, second place, forensics; Samantha Scott and Tia Spagnuolo, third place, chemistry lab; Josh Carey and Eric Werbin, third place, optics; Greg Cajka and Stormy Ruiz, third place, disease detectives; Alyssa Cajka, Josh Carey, third place, wind power; Samantha Scott and Tia Spagnuolo, fourth place, ecology; Alyssa Cajka and Greg Cajka, fourth place technical problem solving; Josh Carey and Greg Cajka, fourth place, astronomy; and Leslie Shumlas and Stormy Ruiz, fourth place, Write It, Do It.
