HANOVER TWP. — The members of the 2011 Leadership Wilkes-Barre’s River Rock project group observed the beginning of spring with an organized cleanup Sunday along Dundee Road in Hanover Township.
According to the group’s members, River Rock’s mission is to promote and encourage environmental awareness in Northeastern Pennsylvania through education and community involvement.
Leadership Wilkes-Barre is a community development organization that nurtures future leaders by providing them with the information, skills and training needed to become effective business leaders who actively participate in the community.
“As a group, we decided to partner with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to clean up illegal dump sites in our area. All along Dundee Road, people have been illegally dumping refuse for years,” event organizer Lindsey Griffin, Kingston, said.
A number of area high school students volunteered their services in the cleanup effort. Dallas freshmen Emily Blessner and Sarah Kerdesky offered their services in exchange for curriculum credit at their school.
“They made an announcement about this weekend’s cleanup and we hurried to signed up,” Blessner said.
“We’re going to donate money to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and we hope everyone who volunteered with us today will continue to work with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful in their efforts to protect our environment,” Leadership Wilkes-Barre member Lisa Webby added.
The organizers would like to thank all the sponsors, venders and volunteers who helped make Sunday’s event a success.
The River Rock Group will be hosting a “Cleanup Celebration” May 14 at Genetti’s in Wilkes-Barre to promote its environmental message.
