Matilda A. “Tillie” Sakowski, 88, of the Newtown section of Hanover Township, died on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at the Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

She was born in Wilkes-Barre, on March 6, 1923, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Deladavitch Shupshinski.

Tillie was employed in the garment industry, in her earlier years, and was a member of the ILGWU, Wilkes-Barre.

She was a member of St. Leo’s/Holy Rosary Church, Ashley.

Tillie was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, William Sakowski; sister, Ann Humenanski; and brothers, Joseph and Vincent Shupshinski.

She is survived by her daughter, Joan Crosby, and her husband, Thomas, Palmerton, Pa.; her son, William Sakowski, and his wife, Margie, Nanticoke; three grandchildren, Gregory Crosby, Virginia Beach, Va., Melissa Sakowski Valentino, Mountain Top, and Shawn Sakowski, Mountain Top; one great-granddaughter, Kaila Crosby; sisters, Ruth Sneeth, Broomfield, Colo., Rose Mattey, Pittston; brother, Raymond Shupshinski, Chesapeake, Va.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley. A Mass of Christian Burial is at 9:30 in St. Leo’s/Holy Rosary Church, with the Rev. Thomas J. O’Malley officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township. Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 to 9 a.m. Wednesday.
