March is Red Cross Month and the American Red Cross Northeast PA Region is planning a number of activities to recognize “Everyday Heroes” who reach out to help their neighbors when they are in need.

Among the events are several “Everyday Heroes” awards, Heroes Campaigns, Community Day at a local shopping mall, blood drives, health and safety classes, a Grand Prix Racing fundraising event and Dress Down days at local business organizations.

For more than 70 years, the nation’s presidents have designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how the American Red Cross helps people across the country and around the world.

The Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters in the United States annually.

It provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families – in war zones, military hospitals and on military installations around the world; collects and distributes about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply and trains millions of people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills.

The NEPA Region responded to 415 local emergencies, assisted over 1,000 military families and trained just over 34,200 people in lifesaving skills. And, people from the region donated approximately 79,000 units of blood.
