(AP) The boyfriend of a New York City fashion designer found dead at an upscale hotel has been convicted of murder.

The verdict for Nicholas Brooks was issued on Thursday as friends of the victim cheered in court. Brooks’ sister wept.

Brooks’ girlfriend, Sylvie Cachay (kash-AY’), was found in an overflowing Manhattan hotel room bathtub in December 2010.

The defendant’s father was Joseph Brooks, an Oscar-winning composer who wrote “You Light up My Life.”

Prosecutors say Nicholas Brooks strangled his girlfriend when she tried to end their relationship. His lawyer says she took too many pills and drowned accidentally.

Brooks faces 25 years to life in prison when he’s sentenced in August.
