HAZLETON — In the hot and humid Harman Geist Stadium on Friday night,
graduates, parents, friends and relatives eagerly anticipated the first
commencement for Hazleton Area High School.
With 601 seniors graduating in the class of 1993, one parent lamented about
her daughter being near the end of the alphabet. “We could’ve come at 8
o’clock!”
Despite everyone’s expectation of a long commencement, the ceremony only
lasted an hour and a half.
Members of the first graduating class took their places in line, which
wound all the way down the street outside of the stadium. Finally the seniors
had reached the end of their long journey to graduation from high school.
Class valedictorian Carla Generose welcomed her peers, their parents and
her fellow graduates to their last time together as a group.
“As we sit here this evening, each student has some significant memories
passing through his or her thoughts,” she said as she fondly reflected on her
own memories. “The only direction and the only guidance that we carry with us
is the result of everything that we have learned in the past 12 years.”
Generose is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Generose, of Hazleton. She
will attend Villanova University, where she will major in economics in
preparation for a career incorporate law.
Salutatorian Tara Dixon made a special, heartfelt tribute to the parents.
She congratulated them on the fine work they have done during the years and
stressed that “we will never forget all that you have done to make us the
special people that we are today.”
Dixon is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Dixon, of West Hazleton. She
will attend the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania,
where she will major in marketing or finance.
Mary Lee Glassberg, one of the top five students, said goodbye to all of
her friends. She spoke of many good times shared between the graduates
throughout their last year. “We did not simply complete the first year at
HAHS; we completed it successfully,” she said.
Senior class president Heather Oster also addressed her peers. “HAHS is a
melting pot of many different personalities, and I am proud to represent such
a diverse group of individuals.”
Mike Sholtes and Melanie Gabriel offered the invocation and benediction.
Principal Rocco Mussoline offered encouraging words to the class, “I will
remember each of you in a special way … you KNOW what I mean!”
The long list of 601 graduates was then read, and the coveted diplomas were
finally presented.
Some parents and students cried while their children and friends took one
of the first steps to adulthood. Others laughed, hardly believing that it was
almost over.
A cluster of white and crimson hats filled the air as the final graduate’s
name was called. A chapter in the members of the class of 1993’s life had been
ended, but their progress and achievements will continue.
Tanya Yacina, 16, of McAdoo Heights, will be a senior at Hazleton Area High
School next year. She is the assistant editor of the school newspaper, In the
Cougar’s Eye.
