SHICKSHINNY – Board members on Tuesday put on hold an offer of approximately
$200,350 from Pepsico, Inc., which wants to be the district’s sole provider of
soft drinks. The board tabled the proposal in favor of examining the contract
further. The contract would bring the school an estimated $200,350 each year
and a scholarship fund during its five-year contract. The district also would
receive 35 percent of retail sales from all machines each month. Also, board
members and parents argued about the condition of steps at Garrison Elementary
School. Board member Joseph Federici was upset about the disrepair of the
stairs, which are boarded up and have not been in use for 10 years because of
their deterioration. Federici said the steps are still dangerous because
children climb over the barricade. The steps are not part of the elementary
school building, but are on a neighboring property. Federici proposed
repairing the steps, but board President Pete Grella rescinded the motion
because no one knew if the stairs were the district’s property. Federici than
asked acting Solicitor David Lipka to find out who is responsible for the
stairs.
