Newport High School (1891-1967), like a lot of other small schools, lost
its identity when consolidation took place and it became a part of the Greater
Nanticoke Area’s John S. Fine High School.
I want to remind the younger generation that Newport High School had its
own identity and great traditions. Originally Newport High School was called
Central High School, located in Wanamie. Its first graduation in 1891 had
three students – two girls and a boy. Its last class graduated in 1967.
In 1936, Newport High School’s boys basketball team were the state
champions. In 1937, they were runners-up.
It is my hope to eventually come up with a listing of the top Newport
athletes. I need your help. If you have a name or names to be considered for
this list, write me at Lily Lake, RR 1 Box 110-T, Wapwallopen PA 18660 with
the name(s) and their accomplishments, documented if possible.
Sometime in the near future, I hope to have a finalized list of the top
athletes. All and any help will be appreciated.
