HAZLETON – City Council is considering a resolution that would ask county
and state agencies to investigate a $120,000 business loan given to Pivotal
Research Group, Inc. in 1998.
The resolution, discussed at a work session Monday, would request that the
Luzerne County District Attorney and the state Department of the Auditor
General investigate the details of the loan to determine whether the owners of
Pivotal have any further liability for the delinquent loan.
Hazleton officials filed suit last January against Pivotal Research, a
Delaware-based air testing company that defaulted on a $120,000 business loan.
According to the loan agreement, Pivotal Research was to open an office in
the Sargent Art Building, formerly the Duplan Building, on East Diamond
Avenue.
However, the company never signed a lease, the building manager said.
Council expects to vote on the resolution Thursday night.
The resolution states that information provided by Pivotal is believed to
be incorrect and misrepresents the applicants’ financial position and
intentions.
Pivotal was granted the loan but later became delinquent in repaying the
loan.
Council’s resolution states that it believes proceeds from the loan have
been improperly spent.
The loan application was submitted on Jan. 23, 1998.
