The deadline to apply for cash grants for heating assistance this winter
has been extended to Feb. 29.
The federally funded Low-Income Energy Assistance Program helps low-income
households pay for a variety of heating fuel sources and furnace repairs. The
state Department of Public Welfare administers the program.
Crisis grants, which are part of the energy assistance program, will be
available through March 15. Those grants provide up to $250 to families with
heating emergencies, such as furnace breakdowns or unexpected fuel shortages.
More than $73 million in energy assistance is available this year. Nearly
260,000 families received help from the program last year.
Grants are based on income, family size, type of heating fuel and the cost
of living.
Applications for cash grants are available through the Department of Public
Welfare’s Luzerne County Assistance Office at 826-2137 or 826-2041. The
applications also can be picked up at the office at 85 E. Union St.,
Wilkes-Barre.
Applications for the crisis grants are available by calling the Commission
on Economic Opportunity in Luzerne County at 826-0510, or in Wyoming County at
836-4090.
