January 25, 2000 ohn Cooper, 84, of Lily Lake, Wapwallopen and Glen Lyon,
died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. Born June 10, 1915, in Glen
Lyon, he was a son of the late John, Sr., and Mary (Koval) Cooper. He was a
1934 graduate of Newport Township High School and a charter member of the high
school reunion committee. He worked for the Susquehanna Coal Co., Glen Lyon,
and the Biscontini Coal Co., retiring in 1965. He was a member of St. Nicholas
Ukrainian Church, Glen Lyon; United Mine Workers of America and the Lily Lake
Property Owners Association. Surviving are his wife, the former Julia Jean
Kopcho, to whom he was married 60 years May 27; sons, John Jerry, at home; and
John Kopcho, Lily Lake; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and
brother, Michael, Glen Lyon. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the George A. Strish, Inc.,
Funeral Home, Glen Lyon, with Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. in St. Nicholas
Ukrainian Church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Paul N. Guthrie
will conduct Parastas services at 7:30 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
