WILKES-BARRE – Mayor Tom McGroarty announced he will submit to City Council
a revised 2000 operating budget at 4 p.m. on Jan. 31.

At tonight’s City Council meeting, the mayor will announce the dates for a
series of special council meetings to address specific aspects of the 2000
budget.
Council also is expected to vote tonight on a resolution authorizing the
City Clerk to solicit bids to conduct the 1999 independent audit of the city’s
finances. Two weeks ago, Councilwoman Kathy Kane chided city officials for
failing to get the 1998 audit done.

The 1998 audit is not due until March because City Council did not award
the audit to accountant Al Kishel until August 1999, though it usually awards
the contract in January or February, said Bill Brace, City
Clerk/Administrator.

The delay “was just a fluke, not the fault of the auditor,” Brace said.
City Council was prepared last January to award the contract to
Lawrence-Mazzoni and Co., but didn’t because the city’s charter prohibits one
company from auditing city’s finances for more than five years.
