Vocalist and composer Lenora Zenzalai Helm will perform at the Deer Head
Inn in Delaware Water Gap on Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight.
   
Helm has been touring the United States and Europe in support of her J
Curve release, “Spirit Child.”
    The release, with original compositions and Helm’s arrangements of jazz
standards, features her trio as well as guest appearances by Ron Carter, Dave
Liebman and Branford Marsalis.
   
Helm recently completed a year as 1998-99 U.S. Jazz Ambassador, a cultural
exchange program sponsored by the U.S. information Agency, Bureau of
Educational and Cultural Affairs, and The John F. Kennedy Center For The
Performing Arts.
   
In 1999 she received “The Dakota” award for rising young jazz talent from
legendary vocalist Dakota Station.
   
Lenora moved to New York in 1987 and quickly became a regular on the music
scene. She has honed her considerable skills recording and touring with Donald
   
Brown, Branford Marsalis, Cissy Houston, Michael Franks and Freddie
Jackson. In addition to performing, she is a Teaching Artist for the Carnegie
Hall LinkUP! program and Young Audiences, New York, providing arts education
to youth in the New York City Public Schools.
   
She is also serves as President of the Board of Directors of International
Women in Jazz.
   
Joining Helm at Deer Head Inn will be her trio, featuring Orrin Evans on
piano (second place winner of the 1999 Thelonious Monk Piano Competition);
Miriam Sullivan, acoustic bass; and Nasheet Waits, drums.
   
The Deer Head is located at 5 Main St., which is part of Route 611, in
Delaware Water Gap. Admission will be $5.
