January 27, 2000 ean M. Burke, 76, of Montgomery Avenue, West Pittston, died
Thursday in Hospice Community Care, Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, after an
illness. Born in Towanda, she was a daughter of the late George and Hazel
(Messersmith) Smith. She graduated from Sayre High School and Washington
Business School, Washington, D.C. She lived on Montgomery Avenue for 35 years.
Before her retirement in 1985, she worked for Leslie Fay, Inc., Pittston. She
was a member of First Presbyterian Church, West Pittston. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Joseph G. Burke. Surviving are her sons, Edward G.,
Vestal, N.Y.; and Larry D., West Pittston; three grandchildren; sister, Evelyn
Reilly, Kingston; and brother, Donald, Raleigh, N.C. Funeral services will be
at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc., Funeral Home, Forty
Fort. The Rev. James Thyren will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial
Shrine Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Community Care, Kingston.
