Firefighters extinguish a fire that engulfed a sport utility vehicle after
it slammed into a gas pump on Friday afternoon on the Sans Souci Highway.
Hanover Township Assistant Fire Chief Stanley Brozowski said the Ford Bronco
II crashed into the pump at Jack’s Sunoco at 12:37 p.m. The driver of the
vehicle, 85-year-old Edward Kosmal, of Nanticoke, was treated for lacerations
of the face at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre and released, a hospital
spokeswoman said. Officials said Kosmal first collided with another vehicle
and was forced into the pump. After the crash, an employee at the service
station shut off the gas and another pulled the man out of the vehicle,
Brozowski said. When fire crews arrived, the Bronco was on top of the
flattened gas pump and both were on fire. The blaze was extinguished with foam
from Hanover Township’s Engine 1 Foam Unit. Assisting firefighters, medics and
police were members of the Nanticoke Fire Department and the Luzerne County
Emergency Management Agency. The EMA was called in to contain the gas runoff.
About 25 rescue personnel responded.
