ELIAN, ELIAN, found in the sea. Finders keeps, say we. Father and homeland
are no place for thee. Materialistic prosperity can we offer thee. Elian,
Elian, were you not fair, would we still care? If deficient in mind and in
need of loving care, would we be there? Decisions would be made as to who
cares. Elian, Elian, be thankful, take care. Father and homeland await thee
there. Blessing and prosperity follow thee there. MAKOWSKI half-heartedly
apologized for the last 25 percent tax increase. It’s almost time to pay
county taxes again. Will the tax be based on and including the 25 percent
increased base, or will the tax be based on the original value before the 25
percent increase? Makowski’s apology is hollow and means nothing if the 25
percent increase is included in this year’s tax figures and apparently will
continue in that fashion.
WHY ARE YOU putting, day after day, a story about a sinking clam boat on
the front page of the paper? This has absolutely nothing to do with anybody
around here. Who cares? EDITOR’S NOTE: We thought it was an interesting story.
(And, after it appeared, we received a call from a woman saying that her
husband and his brother, former clammers, recently moved to the area and knew
some of the men in the story.) Any other comments? Are people only interested
in local news?
ON THE FRONT page, you have “First Union puts a name on the arena.” Well,
I’m very proud to say when my friends ask me where I’m going, I’m going to
tell them I’m going to the F.U. Thanks for the name. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT be
allowed to have letters to the editors. They don’t pay for the paper, adults
do. Our letters to the editors should be printed. If you want to have students
writing letters to the editor, then have a children’s paper and let them pay
for it. EDITOR’S NOTE: We welcome letters from anyone. The editorial page
editor reserves the right to decide which ones to print.
