Man gets jail time for fondling teen
A city man who fondled a 14-year-old girl was sentenced Friday to 2 1/2 to
five years in a state prison. A jury in December found guilty Edmund Smith,
33, Coal Street, of one count each of aggravated indecent assault, indecent
assault and corruption of a minor. Smith was found not guilty of additional
single counts of aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault. He was
charged after the girl told police he fondled her at the Edwardsville
apartment of a family friend on Oct. 12, 1998. The girl testified she was
visiting the home with some of her friends, Smith and another adult. The other
adult went to get pizza and Smith took her into a bedroom and fondled her,
police said.
