In seeing the nice ceremony a few weeks ago where Ken Casey’s jersey was
retired, we should not forget about Trojan football standout Gary Phillips,
who had his jersey retired as well. Some of Gary’s statistics: 355
completions/681 attempts for 52%, 5,370 yards 43 touchdowns and voted to
all-scholastic by all three of the area newspapers at the time. Senior year
statistics: 117 completions/220 attempts, 1878 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Special thanks to Mr. Gerry Bavitz, Nanticoke Area’s Athletic Director, for
providing the statistics. The Trojan athletic spirit is still alive and well,
with the thrilling boys victory over Hazleton area last week. Let’s see what
else is going on in the Nanticoke area. A new altarservers class is being
formed at St. Francis Church. Any girl or boy in grades 3 and up is able to
serve. The first practice is Friday, February 4 at 3:30 p.m. in the church.

Number 4 will hold their monthly meeting on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Espy
Street Station. All members are asked to attend. *** The Apollo Circle
Residents Council hosts a Bingo the third Saturday of every month, except for
February, starting at 1 p.m. Cost is 25 cents per card, per game. 10 games per
session, cash prizes are awarded to each winner. Dates are as follows: Feb.
12, Mar. 18, April 15, May 20, June 17, July 15, Aug. 19, Sept. 16, Oct. 21,
Nov. 18 and Dec. 16. The games are held at 256 Apollo Circle. *** The Greater
Nanticoke Area High School Yearbook Staff for 2000 is seeking ads and patrons
to help offset the cost of production of the 2000 Trojanaire Yearbook. The
yearbook staff is extending the opportunity to advertise in the annual
publication. Ads range in price from $10 to $200. The following categories are
available: $200, full page, picture and write-up with complimentary 2000
yearbook. $100, 1/2 page ad, picture and write up or congratulatory message.
$75, 1/3 page ad, write-up or congratulatory message. $50, 1/4 page
ad,write-up of ad or congratulatory message. $25, 1/8 page ad, write-up of ad
or congratulatory message. $20, block ad (personal message of
congratulations). $10, name of business and address. If you intend to
advertise your business or support the cause by being a patron, please make
checks payable to GNA Yearbook 2000. If you have any questions and/or wish to
request information on advertising be sent to your business address, please
feel free to contact the Greater Nanticoke Area High School Library at
735-4714 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The ad and patron drive will end on April
30, 2000 in order to meet a deadline by the publisher. Support is tax
deductible. *** Greater Nanticoke Area Class of 1985 will hold a class reunion
organizational meeting Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at Kotsko’s Corner Tavern,
East Washington Street, Nanticoke. All classmates are invited to attend. ***
Dog licenses will be on sale at the Nanticoke Municipal Building, Ridge
Street, from January 31 through February 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
*** Tomorrow is February 2, or Candlemas Day, in reading my trusty book of
Polish proverbs I came across this weather proverb for February 2: “Gdy slonce
swieci jasno na Gromnice, to przyjda wieksze mrozy i sniezyce.” Which means
“If Candlemas Day is sunny, there will be more frost and snow.” Let’s hope so!
*** The Glen Lyon Hose Company will hold a Winter Social for members in good
standing on Saturday, Feb. 26 at the social rooms at fire headquarters in
Wanamie. The social will begin at 4 p.m. and refreshments will continue until
10 p.m. The chairmen for the social event are Ed Pauska and Joe Hoover.
Advance reservations are now being accepted by the chairmen and the officers
of the fire company. The final date to make reservations will be on Tuesday,
Feb. 22. Members who are delinquent in their membership dues are requested to
fulfill their due obligations by the date of the social. Dues may be paid to
any officer. The next meeting of the Glen Lyon Hose Company will be held on
Tuesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. at the fire headquarters in Wanamie. ***
Catholic Daughters Infant Jesus of Prague Court 1326 will meet on Sunday,
February 6 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Stanislaus Church, West Church St., Nanticoke.
New members are invited to attend. CDA fundraiser raffle winners will be
chosen at this meeting. *** The Glen Lyon Social Club will meet, weather
permitting, on Thursday, February 24 at 6:00 p.m. at the Italian American
Sporting Club. Dues will be accepted at this meeting. *** The Catholic Women’s
Council of Holy Trinity Church will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2
in the church hall. New members are welcome to attend. Hostess chairperson is
Hedwig Rominski, co-chairperson is Mary Ann Smith. A Valentine’s Day Hat
Contest will be held. The birthday of Father Joseph Orloski, Holy Trinity
Assistant Pastor, will be celebrated. A bakeless bake sale is in progress.
Pierogies will be made the week of March 13. They will be available for
purchase on a first come-first served basis. *** The Lieutenant Chester F.
Strzalka Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8353, Glen Lyon will hold its annual
“Smoker” jointly with the Glen Lyon American Legion Post 539 on Sunday, Feb.
13 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. It will be held at the Glen Lyon American Legion
Home. In order to adequately prepare for this event, members of the post must
make reservations by February 5. Reservations may be made by phoning 735-3014
or 735-0382 or by mail to P.O. Box 41, Glen Lyon, PA 18617. *** Greater
Nanticoke Area High School Class of 1980 will hold an organizational meeting
at 7 p.m. today at the Wyoming Valley Country Club. *** Bible study continues
on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church. Father Joseph Orloski,
Holy Trinity Assistant Pastor, is conducting a poll to see how many would be
interested in holding Bible classes on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. or on
Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. Please call the Holy Trinity Rectory at 735-4833
and leave your name and phone number, and your preference. *** First Penance
at Holy Trinity Church will be held on March 18. Each child in the First Holy
Communion Class must be present for First Penance. Cooperation is expected
with regards to upcoming meetings and practice sessions. *** The Holy Name
Society of St. Mary’s Church, 1030 S. Hanover St. will hold their annual All
You Can Eat Spaghetti Dinner in the parish center on Saturday, March 4.
Serving will be from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Takeouts will be from 3 to 4 p.m.
