MATTHEW G. SOLOVEY EDITOR GREATER NANTICOKE LEADER
Tuesday, February 01, 2000     Page: 2

By Sunday night I still had no idea what to write about this week. My brain
must have frosted from this wintry weather we’re experiencing. Here’s just
some random thoughts I’ve been thinking about. You have to feel bad for the
Tennessee Titans. That is, of course, unless you are a St. Louis Rams fan. The
Titans held on during Super Bowl XXXIV, playing excellent defense, to trail
16-0 in the third quarter. The Titans then went on a scoring spree, tying the
Rams 16-16 with a little over two minutes left in the game. The Rams came
right back, scoring a touchdown on a long bomb.

The Titans didn’t give up. Steve McNair, Titans quarterback, moved his team
down to the 10 yard line, only to miss tying the game by one yard as time ran
out.
I love watching edge of your seat football games like this one, but I felt
Tennessee’s pain. They came so close, playing exceptional football, and went
home as the losers. The Titans may be devastated they lost, but they should be
proud of what they accomplished. Nobody expected them to make the Super Bowl,
yet they did. They played a tough St. Louis Rams team, and almost pulled off a
come from behind win.

*** I love snow. I was very happy to see last week’s storm hit the area
because it finally felt like winter. But Sunday’s storm was enough for me. I
spent much of Monday morning digging out our cars and clearing our sidewalks.
By the time I was finished, I wanted to go back to bed, not to work. I’m ready
for spring now. I’m sure many of the citizens of Northeastern Pennsylvania
agree.

*** Speaking of the snow, is it me, or do dogs act totally nuts when they
start to play in the white stuff? I took our dog Leia outside Monday morning
and watched her bite at the snow, bury her head, and growl like crazy.

*** Wow, babies grow fast! I can’t believe how quickly my daughter Jayden
is growing. She’ll be six months old this week and she looks like a totally
different child than she did three months ago.

Jayden has really been getting a kick out of petting Leia. She giggles like
crazy. Leia enjoys it too, except when Jayden grabs a clump of hair and pulls.
Of course, I can relate, I’m not too excited when she yanks my hair
unexpectedly either.

But oddly, even that is just one more wonderful part of fatherhood. *** The
Nanticoke Conservation Club asked to me to thank a few people for making their
Second Annual Fishing Derby a success. First of all, helping with the fishing
clinic were, Phil Levandowski, Jack Brieda, Walt Brieda, Dave Washinski, Paul
Warchal, Ron Keiner, Ted Wiaterowski, Dave Krafchik and Bob Katra. The club
would also like to thank Sanitary Bakery and Ruminski’s Market, plus a special
thanks to May from Moon Lake. *** Back to the Super Bowl, were you impressed
with any of the commercials? I usually love watching the things, but this year
only a few were very creative. Pets.com had an absolutely hysterical
commercial with the sock-puppet pooch singing and a turtle crying.

The commercial with Wayne Gretzky as a designated driver was quite
entertaining. Gretzky drove a zamboni as his mode of transportation. Top
honors had to go to one of the online trading companies. The ad consisted of a
monkey and two odd looking fellows clapping their hands and playing a song.
“We just wasted $2 million. What are you doing with your money?” was flashed
on the screen at the end.

I laughed like crazy.
