JACKSON TWP. – Supervisor Chairman John Wilkes Jr. said a decision on
American Asphalt’s controversial zoning request has been delayed because of
the Jan. 19 Sun Pipe Line Co. leak.

American Asphalt is asking supervisors to rezone about 60 acres of its
Chase Road stone quarry from agricultural to mining.
At a public hearing last month, residents presented a 500-signature
petition opposing the zoning change. But about 300 workers complained they
will lose their jobs if township supervisors don’t enact the zoning change.
Not getting approval could force the quarry to close, they said.

Wilkes said he is waiting for the hearing transcripts, which should arrive
in about a week. Township secretaries were delayed in copying testimonial
letters because they had to deal with inquiries and paperwork about the Sun
Pipe Line leak.

“We want to thoroughly review hearing documents,” Wilkes said. “We’re
not ignoring American Asphalt by any means.”
