Thank you for running the “Lost at Sea” series (Jan. 23-30) by Douglas
A.Campbell. It was both riveting and informative. To think these men must risk
their lives in such an incredibly dangerous way to put seafood on our plates
is humbling. Yes, the pay can be high – but at what a price. The lobstermen of
New England, the oystermen of the Chesapeake Bay who still brave the icy
winter bay waters in wooden sailboats for their dwindling catch, the crab and
salmon fishermen of the Pacific Northwest – all must fight the same battles as
the clam dredgers described in the series.
I felt as though I came to know these poor men as I read the articles each
day. The sea is without mercy and shows no favorites. Thanks again for a job
well done.
