WILKES-BARRE – The Luzerne County commissioners at their bi-monthly
meeting Wednesday voted to seek a state grant of about $4 million for
environmental studies.
If successful, the grant would tap into hundreds of millions of dollars in
state funding, about $37.5 million of which to be awarded later this year. The
funding will be available under the Environmental Stewardship and Watershed
Protection Act, or the “Growing Greener” program.
County Director of Planning Adrian Merolli said the funds would be used for
a watershed development study, to study the effect of acid mine drainage in
county streams, to update a comprehensive county development plan and to study
further development of the Seven Tubs Natural Area.
In other business, the commissioners extended a one-year lease for the
Thomas C. Thomas warehouse in Wilkes-Barre. The county leases two floors of
the warehouse for $66,000 per year, at $3 per square foot, commission Chairman
Tom Makowski said.
The commissioners also awarded a contract for ballot printing and voting
machine services to Smith Bennett Printing of Wilkes-Barre. The contract was
awarded for the low bid of $34,898, officials said.

Donna Suhoski, Nuangola, licensed practical nurse for $22,249 per year.
