February 2, 2000 etired Sgt. Richard J. “Sarge” Thomas, a resident of the
Northeast Veterans Center, Scranton, formerly of Park Street, Moosic, died
Wednesday at the center. Born July 22, 1909, in Moosic, he was a son of the
late George W. and Nellie (King) Thomas, and a 1927 graduate of Moosic High
School. He retired as a sergeant from the U.S. Army in 1955. He was stationed
in the Hawaiian Islands before World War II and in England in the European
Theater during the war. After his military career, he worked for DeFazio Ice
Co., Moosic; and Garlett Manufacturing Co., Old Forge. For more than 20 years,
he was judge of elections in Moosic. He was also a life member of the Moosic
Hose Co. and Ambulance Association, where he taught first aid classes. He was
a member of American Legion Post 607, Avoca; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
8335, Avoca; and the Moosic United Methodist Church. Surviving his brothers,
Austin, Sunnybank, Va.; and Bernard, Moosic; sister, Margaret Ferri, Old
Forge; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was
preceded in death by brothers, LeGrande and Chester; and sisters, Ruth and
Frances. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday from the Victor M. Ferri
Funeral Home, Old Forge, with services by the Rev. Carl Brown, of Moosic
United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Springbrook Cemetery. Friends
may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Memorial donations may be made to
