Marty Grego, assistant fire chief at the Shades Creek Volunteer Fire
Department, said the company is seeking a secretary. The organization is
always seeking members.
Grego, who has lived in Buck Township for 15 years, and has been a member
of the fire department for 10. He has been an assistant fire chief for two
years and has made a special request. The former secretary of the department
has retired and left the area, leaving a vacancy for the smooth running of
department matters. The position requires about two hours per month, and the
secretary need not be an active firefighter.
The position is open to any retired person or homemaker, anyone willing to
lend a hand. The fire department meets at 8 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each
month at the firehouse.
Grego asks if anyone is available and would like to serve their community,
to please come to the fire department and lend a hand. They need you.

Postal service
sends a message
//
This week, the U.S. Postal Service sent post cards to all the customers
with rural mail boxes regarding winter mail delivery.
The post office asked that “In an effort to efficiently and safely deliver
your mail, we are asking that you please keep the full approach and exit to
your mailbox clear of snow and ice.
“Safety is a priority in the U.S. Postal Service and mail carriers are not
permitted to back up or exit their vehicles when serving your mailbox.
Mailboxes need to be properly cleared so we may continue to deliver your mail
safely.
“Failure to maintain a clear approach and exit to your mailbox may lead to
a temporary delay in the delivery of your mail. Your cooperation is sincerely
appreciated. Please feel free to contact your local post office if you should
have any questions.
The post card featured a drawing of the correct way to clear out the path
for a rural mailbox. The wrong way is to simply shovel from the road to the
front of the mailbox. The right way is to have an approach that is a clear
circle pathway. One which allows a vehicle to drive in and out without
stopping, or having to back up.
Residents are asked to make the pathway safe for the postal service.

Snow angels
///
Who cleared the path to my mailbox?
A special thank you goes out to Bill and Bob, two men in the neighborhood,
who are responsible for the good deeds. Living in Buck Township is a nice
experience.
We have our own snow angels up here. When it snows, the neighbors plow
everyone out. If anyone knows who the snow angels are, please let me know. If
I haven’t thanked you yet, I’m sorry. I just want you to know that I think it
is one of the nicest things a neighbor can do for another. Thank you for doing
such a wonderful job!

Superstition
///
A British superstition among farmers says that a mild January will result
in wintry weather from February right through to the end of May, and as a
result cause poor crops. So thanks to the recent mountain of snow that has
fallen upon us, I am hoping to have low prices and good crops this year. Maybe
we will get lucky? Hope so!

What’s new?
///
If anyone in Bear Creek, Buck Township, Laurel Run, or Bear Creek Village
are having any fund-raisers scheduled, please contact me. I’m wondering what
the parent-teacher organizations are up to. Haven’t heard any news about it
and am quite interested.

Time for hobbies
///
I’m interested in doing a future story on a Bear Creek, Buck Township,
Laurel Run or Bear Creek Village resident who has an interesting hobby. Do you
collect something? Perhaps something odd? Let me know. Or if you are involved
in any crafts, please get in touch.
Churches, fire departments, Girl or Boy Scouts, Lions Clubs, please contact
me. I am seeking information about all events in my coverage area. Someone
must have plans for something wonderful soon? A pancake breakfast?
A spaghetti dinner? A craft show? A flea market? Give me a call so I can
help you spread the word. Gail A. Murray, of Buck Township, reports on events
in Laurel Run and Bear Creek Village boroughs and Bear Creek and Buck
townships. If you have any news, birthdays, anniversaries, meetings or special
events to tell her about, call her at 472-0350, write to: P.O. Box 1012,
