Borough Council will soon consider hiring a new full-time police officer.
At Thursday’s work session, the council discussed the hiring in light of
the recent retirement of Police Chief Joseph Palko. He retired three months
ago, reducing the borough to a staff of four full-time and three part-time
officers. One of the part-time officers’ salary is largely paid from a federal
grant.
Council members were not sure whether participation in the federal COPS
program requires them to maintain their current number of police officers.
They said they will have to research that. If such a requirement does exist,
the borough could hire a new officer or risk losing the grant money.
During the meeting, Councilman Stanley Schenk and others suggested opening
up the current year’s budget to find money for the addition of a new officer.
