WILKES-BARRE – A Nanticoke senior citizen who fought off an escaped state
prison inmate in a supermarket parking lot in August will be honored today by
the U.S. Marshals Service.

U.S. Marshal Walter Sokolowski said Irene Rinehamer will receive the award
at 4 p.m. at the Max Rosenn Federal Courthouse on South Main Street.
Rinehamer, 77, fought off escaped inmate Anthony Yang when he tried to take
her truck keys in a Hanover Township parking lot, hours before his Aug. 19
capture.

Yang and his cellmate had escaped four days earlier from the State
Correctional Institution at Dallas.

Sokolowski said he submitted Rinhamer’s name for the 1999 U.S. Marshals
Service Citizen of the Year Award. She was chosen from the 94 marshal
districts across the country.

Rinehamer was unable to attend the ceremony in Washington D.C., on Tuesday,
so Sokolowski picked up the award to present to her today.
