I’M CALLING FROM Hazleton on Wednsday, I like your article “Lost at Sea” by
Douglas Campbell. Could you tell me where I could get all of the articles?
EDITOR’S NOTE: We received several calls about the eight-part Knight Ridder
series from readers. It series appeared Jan. 24-31 in the Times Leader. You
could buy back issues of the paper for those days. The stories were reported
by the Philadelphia Inquirer, our sister Knight Ridder newspaper. If you have
access to the Internet, you can check out that newspaper’s Web site at
www.phillynews.com, which posted the series online. HAT’S OFF to the four
young men who stopped their car to help push a young lady’s car out of the
ditch after a slide on the snow on Route 309 south on Sunday afternoon about 4
p.m. These men will probably never be known by name to anyone. God bless their
good deeds. POLITICIANS IN Washington are giving large amounts of money to
colleges and universities where the wealthy class of people send their
children. But when it comes to the grade schools and high schools where the
poor kids attend, very little money is given where it is needed most. THANK
YOU TO my carrier who managed to get the paper here in the Meadowcrest
development in Shavertown on today, Jan. 31, the big heavy snow day. I think
you should be commended. Thank you. WITH THE HIRINGS and firings in
Wilkes-Barre Township the turncoat Democrats are beginning to show their
colors. FEEDING A PERSON on heroin through a tube. Well I have no sympathy for
those type of people because I’ve been there before and I’ve been clean now
for over 10 years. They’re the ones that got themselves into that predicament,
they should be able to get themselves out. Nothing is going to help them if
they don’t want to do it. I CAN’T BELIEVE how negative some of these SAYSO
callers are. I would agree that some of the politicians in this area, such as
maybe the mayor of Wilkes-Barre, the Luzerne County commissioners and so
forth, are doing not a very good job. Every time I drive through downtown
Wilkes-Barre I wonder why it’s taking so long to get that once beautiful city
rehabilitated like they’ve done in York, Pa. But on the other hand, it’s a
great place to live. It has a low crime rate, plenty of things to do, such as
wonderful skiing today, a great orchestra, good restaurants, wonderful high
school sports teams, excellent local colleges and so forth. I really enjoy
living here so I really don’t get why people are so irritated except maybe at
the politicians and the lack of investments by some of the private people in
this area that have a lot of money to try and do some good in redeveloping
places like downtown Wilkes-Barre. MY HUSBAND HAS a son that recently moved
back from out of state because his mother was involved in an abusive
relationship, unfortunately she’s continuing to be with this man. And nobody
wants to do anything because the child isn’t physically abused, just
emotionally. I was wondering if anybody else had this problem and they know of
a way that we can solve it, because nobody wants to do anything until like I
said signs of physical abuse. THE PEOPLE OF Luzerne County said “yes” to Mr.
Urban for commissioner and “no” to the current administration. We elected him
knowing that he was going to run for Congress. So we should back off, the
people were told he was going to run for Congress and we still elected him
because we spoke. CHANNEL 16 was talking about these policemen, these firemen,
these construction workers that are out in the cold weather. Why don’t they
get up early in the morning and follow a newspaper carrier around and see how
really cold somebody gets? I’VE BEEN PAYING school taxes for years now, and I
have no children and I also attended parochial schools. Fair play now? PARENTS
WHO HOLD their young children on their lap in the car. If there is an
accident, I hope they’re charged with murder. Please keep your child in a
safety restraint seat, do not hold them. I PERSONALLY AM appalled when I look
at my paycheck and what’s taken out each month in Medicare. I guarantee these
people don’t pay in school taxes what I pay in a year to Medicare. I have two
children in college and a child in high school, my parents are deceased and I
don’t own an old person. THANK YOU TO all who continue in the search for my
beloved American bulldog. My worry for him increases each day especially with
the severity of the weather. If anyone has any information please see the lost
and found ad in the Times Leader classified. AS A DOWNTOWN business merchant I
wish the mayor and city council would bring back the beat cop. The beat cop at
least put in eight hours. TODAY IS FRIDAY, Jan. 28, and you still can’t walk
across the Carey Avenue Bridge from Plymouth to Hanover because of the snow on
the sidewalk. Where is PennDOT? You people don’t want to tell us anything
about PennDOT or Luzerne County Road and Bridge Department. Where are they?
Why aren’t these sidewalks cleaned? I’M A HOMEOWNER out in Jackson Township in
Shavertown, where we just had an environmental disaster. Last evening we had a
meeting for all our local citizens affected, and I found it very ironic that
our local legislators never bothered to come to find out what our concerns
are. PEOPLE THAT smoke, they stink something awful. Aren’t they aware that
they are offending people? Good grief. TO THE BOYS that found my wallet at the
M&T Bank, I thank you very much. I CAN’T BELIEVE that the deputies took a pay
cut to work at the cheap arena. What kind of union do they have? I’VE CALLED
SEVERAL times and I have noticed whatever I called in you paraphrased. So for
things you don’t like you’ll just kind of change it around and for others you
let it go exactly the way they call it in. Now either it’s free speech for
everyone or it’s not. Get with it. EDITOR’S NOTE: Calls are edited for brevity
and clarity. We do not attempt to change the intent of the call. I REALLY
ENJOYED the stories about the clam boats and also the one about “Red Nose
Mike.” I hope you keep putting them in every week, maybe even stories about
local things. Criminals. THE ARENA has just cut the wages of the security
force. But yet last week Mr. Blaum awarded the attorney who is making $25,000
a year an increase of $10,000 to make it $35,000. Is there something wrong
with that picture? THIS IS A SENIOR citizen who lives seven miles outside of
Shickshinny. My husband and I go to the drugstore in Shickshinny about every
week. The first thing we look for is the gorilla to see what he’s wearing. We
get a chuckle out of it. So please don’t take enjoyment out of our lives for
some cranky people and keep dressing that gorilla. There are still some people
who really enjoy the simple things in life. YOU PUT IN the salaries and wages
of the employees at LCCC. I would be interested in knowing to what political
party these employees are registered. My guess would be 99.9 percent are
Democrats. So much for equal opportunity. IF I WERE an employee of Blue Cross
I’d be very upset and disappointed in the organization. They have all this
money to back all these players and the insignias at the new arena and the
hockey team but they can’t keep their employee base. Look what you’re doing to
the economy of this valley.
