PLAINS TWP. – A Bear Creek man charged with initiating a standoff in
December at a local candy manufacturing plant waived his right to a
preliminary hearing Friday.
Stanley Segeda, 31, will stand trial in Luzerne County Court on various
counts of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, simple assault, false
imprisonment, disorderly conduct, possession of instruments of crime and
criminal mischief.
Additional counts of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and unlawful
restraint were dismissed.
According to police:
On Dec. 23, Segeda, a warehouse employee at Sathers Inc. in Pittston
Township, held two women at gunpoint, barricaded himself inside a cafeteria,
fired shots at police and broadcast warnings over an intercom that he would
kill any officer within sight.
Police said two officers approached the cafeteria and saw Segeda pointing a
revolver at his girlfriend and another female employee. When he spotted
police, Segeda pushed the women out the door. Officers escaped with them and
called for backup help.
The standoff ended at about 5 a.m., roughly five hours after Segeda entered
Sathers with a loaded gun duct-taped to his hand and took the women captive.
No one was injured in the standoff.
Attorney Frank Nocito is defending Segeda.
