Open Female Division CARISSA MESSIMER scored the winning goal for the
University of Maryland field hockey team in the NCAA Division I national
championship game. Messimer, a Crestwood graduate, is the KBAC Hoinski winner
in the open female division. She was a Hoinski winner in the scholastic female
division during her sophomore year in high school and was a finalist in that
division the past two years. During her freshman season at Maryland, Messimer
scored 14 goals and had two assists. She was named second-team regional
all-American in 1999 and was a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team.
Finalists Joanne Polakoski, a Meyers graduate who was a first-team
all-American during her junior season for the King’s College women’s
basketball team. Tracey Polliard, a triathlete from Wilkes-Barre who finished
13th in the 25-29 age group at the ITU Triathlon World Championship in
Montreal. Semifinalists Heather Medashefski, a Hazleton Area graduate who
signed a contract to play pro women’s basketball in Europe after graduating
from King’s College. Sara Clause, a Coughlin graduate who was named a regional
all-American in field hockey after helping Wilkes University win its first MAC
championship. Lindsay Pappas, a Meyers graduate who broke every scoring record
for the Marywood University women’s soccer team as a freshman. Robyn
Mendygral, a Hanover Area graduate who was named honorable mention
All-American in softball after her sophomore year at Wilkes University. Maria
Ulicny, a Coughlin graduate who was named a regional all-American in field
hockey after finishing as King’s College’s all-time leading scorer.
