Here is a capsule look at Saturday’s game against the Hershey Bears. FIRST
PERIOD: Jean-Sebastien Aubin is the Penguins’ starting goalie for the first
time since Jan. 25 against Syracuse. For the second consecutive night, Hershey
scores first. At 7:07, Steffon Walby backhands a rebound past Aubin for his
fifth goal of the season. The play began with Aubin making a right pad save on
Brian White’s slapshot from the point. Scott Parker also assists. It takes
just 36 seconds for the Penguins to tie the game. Mark Murphy receives a pass
from J.P. Tessier, crosses the blue line and unleashes a slapshot from the
right circle that whips through the five hole of Hershey goalie David
Aebischer. It’s the Penguins first goal in 109 minutes, 32 seconds of play
dating back to the second period of Tuesday’s game against Albany. Hershey
regains the lead with its sixth short-handed goal of the season against the
Penguins. Dan Hinote steals the puck from Valentin Morozov at the Bears’ blue
line and has a breakaway against Aubin. He dekes left, and then scores on the
forehand. It’s the league-high 13th short-handed goal the Penguins have
allowed this season. Six different Hershey players have scored short-handed
goals against the Penguins. While on the same power play, the Penguins tie the
game on John Slaney’s 21st goal of the season. Seconds before the goal, a
Slaney slapshot sends Hershey’s Christian Matte to the ice when the puck hits
his ankle. The Penguins actually have a 5-on-3 because he is unable to get to
the bench for a replacement. Sven Butenschon passes to Slaney in the high
slot, who then one-times the puck past Aebischer at 9:48. Steve Leach also
assists. Hershey again takes the lead, this time on Brad Larsen’s eighth goal
of the season. Aubin makes the save on Parker’s shot, but Larsen is there for
the rebound. Actually, Aubin saves Larsen’s first shot, but Larsen is able to
score on his second. Serge Aubin also assists. Hershey outshoots the Penguins,
20-9. Hershey 3, Penguins 2 SECOND PERIOD: Twenty seconds into the period,
Martin Sonnenberg receives a double-minor high stick penalty. Twenty-one
seconds later, Hershey takes a 4-2 lead on Hinote’s power-play goal. From the
left circle, Matte gently dumps the puck on Aubin. As anticipated, Aubin makes
the save, but the rebound falls in front of Hinote, who sweeps it in. Smith
also assists. At 15:59, Hershey scores its second power-play goal of the night
when Matte’s one-timer from the left circle blisters past Aubin. Mike Gaul and
Serge Aubin assist. The referee had his arm raised for a delayed penalty
against Hershey when the Penguins score at 17:07. Goalie Aubin leaves the ice
for a sixth attacker. Murphy and Sonnenberg are able to work the puck out of
the corner and out to Andrew Ference at the left point. Ference’s shot is
deflected by a Hershey defender and gets past Aebischer for his third goal of
the season. Sonnenberg and Murphy assist. Hershey outshoots the Penguins,
18-13. Hershey 5, Penguins 3 THIRD PERIOD: The Penguins cut the deficit to one
with their sixth short-handed goal of the season. With Josef Melichar off for
tripping, Leach circles at the Hershey blue line and feeds a pass to
Butenschon breaking into the zone. On the breakaway, Butenschon dekes
Aebischer and flips the puck into the net for his 11th goal of the season at
3:21. Slaney also assists. The Penguins remove Aubin from goal with 1:21 left
in the game for a sixth attacker but are unable to score. Hershey outshoots
the Penguins, 12-10. For the game, Hershey outshoots the Penguins, 50-32.
