A Luzerne man told investigators that he tried to steal a woman’s purse
Sunday because he has a $180-a-day heroin habit, police said.

Matthew Libby, 19, was charged Tuesday with two counts each of attempted
robbery and simple assault and one count of attempted theft, police said.
Police said Libby tried to snatch a purse from a 55-year-old area woman in
the Ames Department Store parking lot.

The woman put up a fight and was injured when Libby knocked her into two
parked cars and subsequently to the ground, police said.

Plymouth police assisted in apprehending Libby who was arrested at his
girlfriend’s house on New Street in Plymouth, Edwardsville police said.

Libby, of Sly Street, was arraigned before District Justice John Hopkins
and committed to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $10,000
bail.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday before Hopkins.
