Concerning the commentary, “Some dogs are weapons – ban them” by Ingrid
Newkirk from PETA (Jan. 30), four years ago my 22-year-old brother decided to
get a dog, a pit bull. Everyone tried to talk him out of it. Being a cat lover
all of my life, I probably opposed it the most.

“Why such a destructive dog?” we asked. All you had to do was turn on the
TV or read the papers and you would know the truth about the breed. Or so I
thought.
Within months the dog became a large part of my life. I am now the owner.

I am not a naive owner. I know that with the wrong intentions these dogs
can be savage, but the owners are to blame, not the breed. With the right
training and love, you can have a great friend and loyal companion. Dogs
become what the owners make them.

So instead of euthanasia or legislation to ban pit bulls – or any breed why
don’t we start solving the real problem by prosecuting the owners who abuse
these animals?
