The high school basketball regular season is coming to a close and Wyoming
Valley Conference second-half title races are tightening.
   
In Division I, Wyoming Valley West is on top with a 4-1 record, while
Coughlin trails at 3-1. The Crusaders visit the Spartans on Friday.
    Hazleton Area, the division first-half champion, is 3-2. The Cougars
defeated the Spartans 44-37 last week, and visit the Crusaders on Feb. 15.
   
Wyoming Area leads Division II at 5-0, while Crestwood is second at 4-1 and
first-half champ Nanticoke is 3-2. The Comets defeated the Trojans 62-56 on
Friday thanks to John Weyrauch’s 29 points.
   
The Warriors won cross-over games with Berwick, Coughlin, Pittston Area and
also beat league opponents Lake-Lehman and Dallas.
   
Steve Buzinski posted a triple-double against the Black Knights. The
6-foot-3-inch forward scored 20 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked 10
shots.
   
Wyoming Area hosts Hanover Area (2-3) tonight. The Warriors finish the
second half with trips to Nanticoke on Friday and Crestwood on Feb. 15.
   
The Division III second-half title will likely come down to Meyers (4-0)
and GAR (4-0) again. The Mohawks won the first half by defeating the
Grenadiers, 66-40. The victory snapped GAR’s 36-game WVC winning streak. The
Grenadiers visit the Mohawks on Feb. 15.
   
Seton Catholic (3-1) is also in the mix. The Eagles are led by Sean HEALEY,
who scored 30 last week against Northwest, while teammate Joe Tracy added 27.
HEALEY also totaled 22 in a losing effort against GAR. The Eagles host the
Mohawks on Friday.
   
The week’s top performances: Matt Hopple scored 26 against Lake-Lehman …
GAR’s Kevin Brown scored 10 of his 20 points against Bishop Hafey in the third
quarter as the Grenadiers downed the Vikings, 63-45. Hafey’s Frank Stish led
all scorers with 28 and GAR’s Isaiah Walker scored 21. Walker also scored 20
against Seton … Ed Altemose scored 26 and 25 in two games for Northwest …
Pittston Area’s Phil CASTELLINO scored 29 against Coughlin … Joel McAndrew
tossed in 23 against Bishop O’Reilly … Hanover Area’s Dave Plisko scored 23
and teammate Josh Oravic added 22 against Lake-Lehman … Bishop Hoban’s Mark
Williams scored 26 against Northwest … Jason Thompson of Bishop O’Reilly had
20 against Bishop Hafey.
