February 6, 2000 lfred R. Knecht Sr., of Stroudsburg, died Sunday at the
Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. Born Aug. 12, 1921, in Long Pond, he
was a son of the late Arthur and Helen (Bellis) Knecht. He retired in 1986 as
a union carpenter for Local 800, Lehigh Valley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of
World War II, serving with Company E, 544th Engineers Boat and Shore Regiment.
He received four Bronze Stars and a Certificate of Meritorious Service. He was
a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5382, Sciota; American Legion
Post 927, Gilbert; the Saylorsburg Hunting Club; and the Blue Ridge Hook and
Ladder Volunteer Fire Co., Saylorsburg. He was a volunteer for the Saylorsburg
Playground Association. Surviving are his wife, Alice (Luton) Knecht, to whom
he was married 54 years; daughters: Sharon Olsen, Neola; and Linda Knecht
Shovlin, Saylorsburg; sons, Alfred, Jr., Hamilton Square; Barry, Kunkletown;
and Vince, Stroudsburg; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
brothers, Charles, Tobyhanna; Richard, Bartonsville; and Arthur, Jr., Pocono
Lake; sisters, Carolyn Clark, Trevose; Arlene Kibler, Bath; Louise Smale,
Kunkletown; and Alberta Gardner, Long Pond. He was preceded in death by
brothers, James, Robert and Carl; and sisters, Lorraine Luden, Madeline Gower
and Shirley Miller. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until time of services on
Wednesday at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Gilbert. American Legion
services will begin at 7:45 p.m., with funeral services at 8 p.m. Interment
will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations may be made to American Legion Post 927, Route 209, Gilbert, 18331.
