A concerned parent Monday night once again voiced her disapproval of the
lack of an elementary art program in the Hanover Area School District. Peggy
Mullin has addressed the school board numerous times during the last year. She
said her fourth-grade daughter had an art class only two or three times since
the beginning of the school year. She further presented two of her daughter’s
art projects to the board to show they are not appropriate projects for her
grade level. “They’re excellent teachers. They’re just not qualified to
teach art,” Mullin said. “I’m here from the PTA to ask Hanover Area to
reinstate art …” Board member Peter Halesey said that elementary teachers
are trained in art to some degree. “We should look into a prepared art
program,” he said. Superintendent Alberta Griffiths replied, “We do have an
art curriculum.” There was no further discussion of the matter at the work
session. In other matters:
The board will vote to amend the sabbatical policy to comply with the
Pennsylvania School Boards Association’s Policy Guides for Pennsylvania
Schools. The new policy will reduce the reasons for a sabbatical leave from
three to one for medical purposes only. An educational leave is now listed
under a separate heading.

The board also will vote to upgrade its 1988 video systems with the
installation of color monitors in the elementary schools, at about $1,100 per
school.
The district received a competitive Road to Succeed Grant from the
Pennsylvania State Department of Education for about $110,000.

The items discussed will be on the agenda at Wednesday’s 7 p.m. regular
meeting.
