February 6, 2000 Mary (Kopcho) Sunder, of Oak Street, Hanover section of
Nanticoke, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. Born Aug. 14, 1908,
in Alden, Newport Township, she was a daughter of the late Wasil and Anna
(Kachurek) Kopcho. She attended Askam School, Hanover Township, and lived in
Nanticoke most of her life. She was a head cook at weddings and social events
in her younger years, and assisted in the startup of pierogi making at
Nardozzo’s Pizzeria. She was a former member of the Altar & Rosary Society of
St. Mary’s Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, Nanticoke. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Michael; daughter, Katherine (Sunder) Wengen; brother,
John; and sister, Helen Lopatto. Surviving are her daughter, Mary Ann Sunder,
with whom she resided; one grandchild; sisters, Ann Warren, Hanover Township;
Jean Cooper, Wapwallopen, Conyngham Township; Susan Luzenski, Wilkes-Barre;
and Margaret Koflanovich, Wanamie, Conyngham Township; nine godchildren and
several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m.
Wednesday from the George A. Strish, Inc., Funeral Home, Glen Lyon, Newport
Township, with Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Byzantine Rite Catholic
Church. Interment will be in St. Michael’s Byzantine Rite Catholic Cemetery,
Glen Lyon. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A Parastas
service will be at 7 this evening. The Rev. John Balog will officiate.
