No challenge understanding wrestling scoring, or finding Nanticoke events
After going to three Nanticoke Area matches I think I can safely say I am no
longer confused by the scoring of high school wrestling. It just took a little
time. Plus, the chart of hand signals that the officials use in the program
was helpful. There were impressive performances by Nanticoke wrestlers Derek
Sheruda, Jeremy Baer, Matt Yokavonis, and Tony Rodriguez. The physical
challenges of wrestling are impressive. Makes my challenge of trying to
understand the scoring seem trivial. One thing that is not a challenge is
finding interesting things to do in Nanticoke … here are some right now. The
Greater Nanticoke Area Senior Yearbook Staff announces its subscription dates
of Monday, February 14 (Valentine’s Day) until Friday, March 3 to order the
Trojanaire 2000 Yearbook. A cash deposit or check payable to the G.N.A.
Yearbook in the amount of $40 can be made in the high school library, Monday
through Friday during regular school hours throughout the subscription period.
Balance is payable by April 15. Students in grades 8-9-10-11-12 can order the
Trojanaire that will include class pictures, activities, sports,
organizations, and candid photos of students throughout the 1999-2000 school
year. Students will receive an order form, which they can complete and return
to the library with their deposit during the subscription period. The
Trojanaire 2000 deluxe edition also comes with your full name engraved on
cover, a dust-free protective book jacket, and 16 page color almanac covering
world events that happened during the 1999-2000 school year. Parents,
relatives, friends, and alumni are reminded that personal ads with special
messages and photos ranging in price from $25 to $10 can be placed in the
Trojanaire to congratulate our graduating seniors in the Class of 2000. For
the details, call the GNA Yearbook adviser 735-4714. Business ads supporting
the Trojanaire 2000 can also be placed to support the Trojanaire and this
year’s senior class. Refer to above number for details. Seniors who turn in
personal and business ads have an opportunity to earn a free and/or yearbook
at a discounted price. The support of all classes and the communities in the
Greater Nanticoke School District is needed in order to keep the Trojanaire in
its award-winning format. *** The Newport Township Senior Citizens Club will
meet on Thursday, February 17 at 6 p.m. at the Greater Nanticoke Area Senior
High School. Discussion of upcoming spring events will take place. New members
are welcome, dues will be collected at this meeting. Any questions call Bernie

Class of 1980 will meet Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at Wyoming Valley Country
Club, Middle Road, Hanover Township. All classmates are invited to attend to
plan the 20th class reunion which will be held Saturday, Nov. 25 at the
Wyoming Valley Country Club, *** The Greater Nanticoke Area Chorus Parents
Organization will hold their monthly meeting today at 6:30 P.M. in the chorus
room of the high school. Members are urged to attend. *** Dog licenses are on
sale now through February 11 at the Nanticoke Municipal Building from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. daily. *** The Altar & Rosary Society of St. Francis of Assisi
Church will hold their monthly meeting in the Parish Center at 7:30 p.m.
today. New members are welcome to attend. *** St. Francis of Assisi Church
will host a blood drive on Sunday, February 13 a the Parish Center, 173 E.
Green St. Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
   
*** The Glen Lyon Hose Company will hold a Winter Social for members in
good standing on Saturday, February 26 at the social rooms at fire
headquarters in Wanamie. The social will begin at 4 p.m. and refreshments will
continue until 10 p.m. The chairmen for the social event are Ed Pauska and Joe
Hoover. Advance reservations are now being accepted by the chairmen and the
officers of the fire company. The final date to make reservations will be on
Tuesday, February 22. Members who are delinquent in their membership dues are
requested to fulfill their due obligations by the date of the social. Dues may
be paid to any officer. The next meeting of the Glen Lyon Hose Company will be
held on Tuesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. at the fire headquarters in Wanamie. ***
The Glen Lyon Social Club will meet, weather permitting, on Thursday, Feb. 24
at 6 p.m. at the Italian American Sporting Club. Dues will be accepted at this
meeting. *** The Holy Name Society of St. Mary’s Church, 1030 S. Hanover St.
will hold their annual All You Can Eat Spaghetti Dinner in the parish center
on Saturday, March 4. Serving will be from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Takeouts will
be from 3 to 4 p.m. with containers provided. Adults $6. Children $3. ***
Christopher Matthew Flint, son of Mrs. Janine Flint and the Rev. Thomas Flint,
was baptized on February 6 at the Calvary United Methodist Church, West
Nanticoke. The Rev. Dr. James A. Baker, Wilkes-Barre District Superintendent,
presided at the sacrament. Proud godparents are Patrick J. Osman & Karen E.
Flint, his uncle and aunt. Christopher was born August 17, 1999. *** Pope
John Paul II School will hold Kindergarten registration for full and half day
session, and open registration for grades 1-8, this week, February 7-11.
Kindergarten registrants must bring birth, Baptismal and up to date
immunization records. $30 non-refundable registration fee is required. A
signature from the supporting pastor will be required. For more information

John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, State St. and St. Mark’s Church, Pond Hill
on Thursday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s. On February 13 at St.
Mark’s there will be a council meeting and covered dish dinner following the
church service. *** The Newport Township Lions Club will conduct its monthly
business meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Centre Inn, Sheatown.
All members are requested to attend. Lion Andrew Gotcha will preside. The
Club’s “Charter Night” dinner meeting will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 26. ***
