I TOOK NOTICE that the state high school boys basketball rankings in your
paper list Meyers with a record of 17-1, yet when I watch Channel 16 with
their Super 16 basketball, it has Meyers listed with four losses. So I wanted
to know where the mistake is and what their record really is. Thank you.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Meyers is 17-4. The poll, done by the Patriot News in
Harrisburg, was incorrect. HOBAN BASKETBALL COACH Bob Schuler should take a
page from the Nanticoke girls state title team. He should settle on five
starters instead of rotating seven or eight different starters. The team has
to be able to gel. Settle on five starters and play them 32 minutes like the
Nanticoke team did. Hoban’s best players are not going to be in shape to play
32 minutes when it comes to playoff time. Forget about running the scores up
on these teams. Nanticoke scored 100 points a game on the teams. These teams
don’t know what running the score up is. Settle on five starters coach. Also,
they’re not going to get any state all-star recognition if he starts all these
players. EDITOR’S NOTE: Schuler’s strategy of rotating players seemed to work
fine last season when Hoban won the state championship. I’M CALLING IN
regards to the comment about Bishop Hoban and their wrestling team. I don’t
have any children in Bishop Hoban and I don’t know anyone that goes to Bishop
Hoban, but I do read your sports page every day because I love the coverage
you give to these kids. I don’t know where that man is coming from. As far as
I can see, the girls swimming team is in first place, they’re undefeated, the
girls basketball team is undefeated (in the league). Last year they were state
champs. The boys swimming team is in third place, the boys basketball team is
tied for third place and the 1999 baseball team were district champs, as I
recall. I don’t know what this person is talking about. Tell him to read the
entire paper before making comments. I give Bishop Hoban and all the kids
credit at every school. CONGRATULATIONS TO EX-LARKSVILLE resident and Berwick
High School football coach George Curry for being named the best football
coach of the century in the state of Pennsylvania. Good work George. EDITOR’S
NOTE: Curry was selected the state’s top high school football coach by readers
of the Pennsylvania Football News. Raghib Ismail (Meyers), Lou Michaels
(Swoyersville), Bo Orlando (Berwick) and John Yaccino (Hazleton) also were
named to the first team.
