John Gaiteri resigned his seat on Borough Council at Monday night’s meeting.
Gaiteri, a Republican, said in a letter to council he would no longer be able
to perform his duties because of a lingering medical condition. He served the
borough for 14 years on council and two terms as mayor. Dick Yingst, a
Republican, was nominated 4-3 to replace Gaiteri. His term will expire in
2002. Republican John Mosca also was nominated. Council members Alice
Yamrick, Lisa Howell, Dave Williams and Louis Cardoni voted for Yingst. Andy
Tuzinski, Betty Mascelli and Rick Berry voted for Mosca. In other business,
council members clashed over a motion by Berry to limit the amount of time
residents and council members may discuss one subject. Berry’s motion was
seconded by Cardoni, who withdrew his motion after protests by Howell and
Mayor Robert Megatulski. Howell said it is unethical to limit people to three
minutes because they might have a subject they feel strongly about. “It takes
more than three minutes to lay the framework; that’s outrageous.” Berry
responded by saying residents should prepare their statements ahead of time.
Berry then amended his motion to a 10-minute limit but no one seconded it.
