The state Department of Education has approved preliminary plans for
construction of a middle school attachment to Lake-Lehman High School,
Superintendent William E. Price told the School Board on Tuesday night.

However, the board, at the urging of member Ronald Payne, still will look
at the feasibility of renovating the middle school, which Price said has
“faulty water, questionable sewage and cramped conditions.”
Price said the board’s vote to accept the state’s approval of the first
part of the plan, which is a conceptualization of the $7 million project, did
not bind the district to the construction.

“It merely means the board is ready to go on to the next step,” Price
said.

Payne suggested having district architect Douglas Trumbower do a study on
the cost of renovating the building, which another architect had done in the
past. Member Charles Boytin expressed concerns about the cost and delaying the
project further.

Trumbower suggested the board tour the old middle school to see its
condition.
