WILKES-BARRE — How do we break those long-standing myths about skilled trade careers?
• “Trades don’t pay well”
• “Trades aren’t stable”
• “Trades are only for men”
• “College is the only path to success”
Luzerne County Community College provided information to shed some light on the “myth versus reality” debate.
Myth: “Trades don’t pay well.”
Reality: Skilled trade careers can provide competitive wages and opportunities for advancement.
Employers throughout the region continue to seek qualified workers in welding, HVAC, electrical technology, transportation, manufacturing, healthcare support, and infrastructure.
Myth: “Trades aren’t stable.”
Reality: Skilled workers are needed in every community. As industries grow and experienced employees retire, demand continues for trained professionals who can fill critical roles.
Myth: “Trades are only for men.”
Reality: Skilled trades are career opportunities for everyone. Women continue to make important contributions in fields such as welding, electrical technology, advanced manufacturing, transportation, and construction.
Success in the trades is based on ability, dedication, problem-solving, and a willingness to learn.

Luzerne County Community College continues to work with employers and industry partners to ensure students receive training aligned with today’s workforce needs.

Reality: There are multiple pathways to a successful career, and skilled trades are an important part of higher education.
Community colleges provide students with affordable, accessible education that leads directly to careers. Many students choose technical training, industry credentials, certificates, or associate degrees because they provide a faster pathway into high-demand jobs.
