SALEM TWP. — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the transfer of the operating licenses of Units 1 and 2 of the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station to Riverstone Holdings LLC from Talen Energy Corp, according to a press release issued Wednesday.

The approval from the NRC is effective immediately, the release said. The NRC concluded that Riverstone is qualified to hold the ownership interests in the facility previously held by Talen.

The NRC’s approval formally completes a four-step process for Riverstone to buy Talen Energy, a 2015 spin-off of PPL’s energy-generating assets.

The first step was for Riverstone to formally buy Talen Energy, which happened in early June. The value of the transaction is estimated at $5.2 billion.

A special meeting of the stockholders approving the sale on Oct. 6 completed the second step.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approving the merger of Talen Energy into Riverstone, was the third step, which was completed in late October.

FERC concluded the merger would not have a detrimental effect on competitive wholesale power markets.

The reactors are licensed to operate through July 17, 2042, for Unit 1, and March 23, 2044, for Unit 2.

Upon announcement of the acquisition, Talen’s stock at the closing Thursday was down one cent to $13.96.
