Aldi to debut expanded

Kingston site on July 6

KINGSTON — A discount grocery store that has been closed since mid-May for renovations is set to reopen next week, officials say.

The Aldi market on Pierce Street will swing open its doors again at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 6.

The renovations included a significant expansion.

The Kingston store was going from 9,000 square feet to 12,000 square feet as well as adding an additional shopping aisle, Bob Grammer, a company vice president, told the Times Leader in May.

Shoppers will notice open ceilings and more natural lighting. The project also added energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting.

“The updated Kingston store look will deliver on our customers’ desire for a modern and convenient shopping experience with a focus on fresh items, including more robust produce, dairy and bakery sections,” Grammer said previously.

Aldi operates more than 1,600 stores in 35 states. Besides Kingston, it has other local outlets in Pittston Township and Berwick.

McCarthy Tire acquires

Philadelphia company

WILKES-BARRE — McCarthy Tire Service, based in Wilkes-Barre, has purchased P.J. Dooling Tire Co. of Philadelphia, according to a press release.

P.J. Dooling specializes in industrial and off-road tire sales and service, with expertise in foam filling and pressing.

“I am looking forward to working with the Dooling team,” John D. McCarthy Jr., president of McCarthy Tire, said in the release. “This acquisition is a great addition to our existing footprint. The Dooling family exhibits many of the same ‘service the customer’ philosophies that we have, so we believe it will be a seamless transition for their customers.”

Dooling’s tire sales and service operations will be merged into McCarthy’s current commercial location in nearby Trainer, a Philadelphia suburb. Twelve employees, including brothers Greg and Paul Dooling, will join McCarthy Tire.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

McCarthy Tire, in business since 1926, is the sixth-largest independent commercial tire dealership in North America with 2016 commercial-related sales of $301 million.
