HARRISBURG — A Wilkes-Barre physician was recently appointed to fill a vacant seat on the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s board of trustees, a press release says.

Maria Escano, M.D., a trauma surgeon and surgical intensivist practicing at Intermountain Medical Group, will serve on the board until October 2019.

She will represent physicians from Luzerne, Bradford, Susquehanna, Sullivan and Wyoming counties.

The release describes her as a “quality improvement and patient-systems safety advocate.”

She is also president of the American Trauma Foundation and developed the Co-Co Project, a community-corporate partnership meant to improve opportunities in impoverished areas.

Escano earned her medical degree at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Her post-graduate training included time at Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital. She also completed a fellowship at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland.
