GFWC-West Side promotes education/literacy at Dana Elementary Center

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs-West Side, a volunteer community service organization, recently provided a tutoring/literacy program for kindergarten students at Wyoming Valley West Dana Elementary School.

The program runs from September through May and it supports the GFWC-PA State President’s Project “Enrich, Educate, Empower — Every Child Every Day.” Club members tutored four kindergarten classes with 92 students participating in the program in conjunction with the school’s Breakfast Club, peer tutoring and intervention strategies. Volunteers helped students in recognizing 2- and 3-dimensional shapes, identifying numbers , counting in sequence to 100, identifying capital and lower case letters, recognizing letter/sound relationships, and identifying sight words as well as reading.

The tutoring program will resume in September.
