The Luzerne-Columbia PARSE (Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees) Chapter will hold a business meeting/luncheon on June 28, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. at Genetti Hotel and Conference Center, 77 E. American Legion Mountain Post 781, the July 4th Celebration at the American Legion Post 781, off of Church Rd., Mountaintop will start after the parade at the Legion Grove. All members and their families are invited to attend. Admission to the festivities will be a donation of a non-perishable item by each person in your group. These items will fill packages for troops serving overseas during the Christmas holiday. Please deposit your non perishable item in the container provided upon your arrival. Some suggested items are: Beef jerky, tissues, flea and tick collars, wrapped candy (any kind), sardines (pull tab), canned fruit, tuna, tooth brushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, powered sweetened juice drinks, iced tea mix, lemonade, cheese crackers, peanut butter crackers, granola bars, peanuts, trail mix, water (plastic bottle), chips, pretzels, popcorn, Tastykakes, packaged cookies, raisins, writing paper, pens/pencils, phone cards, gum, mints, Tylenol, white socks, bright colored pillow cases, Visine eye wash, bubbles, squirt guns, puzzle books of any kind, body wash, shampoo, instant coffee, tea bags, small travel games (chess, checkers, sorry, scrabble, etc.), Band-aides, playing cards, old maid cards, crazy eights, Uno, Phase 10, deodorant, wet wipes, rubbing alcohol, Gold Bond foot powder, any funny DVD’s and talc powder. Please check expiration dates as these packages will not be sent out until November for the Christmas holiday.

Knights of Columbus St. Leo the Great Council 12089, will meet at 7 p.m. July 10 at Saint Leo’s Church hall, 33 Manhattan St., Ashley. Grand Knight Frank A. will preside.

Alhamar Caravan No. 4, will meet at 7:30 p.m. July 11 at Saint Conrads Young Men’s Society, 217 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre. Grand Commander Cathy Kennedy will preside. All members are welcome.

Wyoming Valley Civil War Round Table, will meet at 7 p.m. July 12 in the lower level of the Daddow-Isaacs American Legion, 730 Memorial Highway, Dallas. The evening’s program is titled, “Bible, Bullets and Bucktails” and will be presented by Pastor John Lee as Civil War Chaplain William M. McCormick 150 P.VI. Bucktail. Pastor Lee, and Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, will discuss how an ordained minister became a rifleman/chaplain and talk about his duties and travels as well as some background on the Bucktails. Plains Lions Club, will host its annual Golf Tournament fundraiser July 15 at Sand Spring Country Club in Drums. Registration begins at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Team format is captain and crew. $85 per person or $340 per team covers all fees. Event features a raffle table, hole prizes, games, cash prizes for flight winners and full course dinner immediately following the tournament. Dallas Chapter Eastern Star Building Association, will host a flea market and craft and vendor sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 27 at the Easter Star hall, 15 Foster St., Dallas. Dupont VFW Post 4909, will hold a Sock Hop Dinner Dance on Sept. 8. Millennium will provide live musical entertainment from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A dinner buffet will be served from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m., and the bar will be open from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The donation is $30 per person. Wyoming Valley Woman’s Club, will sponsor a trip to see “Nunsense” at the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse in New Jersey on Aug. 8. The trip costs $90, which includes bus seat, ticket to the show and lunch. Rotary Club of Mountain Top, will hold its annual Steam Train Excursion from Mountain Top to historic Jim Thorpe on Sept. 22, rain or shine. Tickets are available at Triangle Pharmacy in Mountain Top or online at EventBrite. The price is $70 per person. Boarding time is 8:30 a.m., and departure will take place at 9:30 a.m. The return trip departs at 4 p.m. from Jim Thorpe. The train yard at Penobscot it not handicap accessible.
