If you’ve lived around here for a while, you’ve undoubtedly heard of Connor McGovern, the Lake-Lehman High School and Penn State alumnus who is now an offensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys.

Throughout his collegiate and professional career, he’s been incredibly devoted to the area in which he grew up, which is why Friday, July 8, beginning at 6 p.m. he’ll be signing memorabilia at the Broadway Tavern in Mountain Top.

He’ll sign any item for $35, do a three-word inscription for $10 or do an in-person photo for $20.

The event is to raise a portion of proceeds for two causes, both of which I’m familiar.

One place money raised will go to is the Wilkes-Barre Special Needs Playground, designed for children with cognitive or physical disabilities such as autism or Down syndrome. The project has been estimated to cost roughly $400,000 for special equipment such as a merry-go-round that locks in riders and a swing that holds a wheelchair, as well as infrastructure changes for adaptable pathways in Kirby Park.

The vision for the playground is to give all children a place to learn, imagine and play together.

Other dollars will go toward the family of Rob Wilson, a Back Mountain man suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare immune system disorder that attacks the nerves. The sensations spread throughout the whole body, making daily tasks difficult or impossible. Money will go toward offsetting the many medical costs and travel expenses the Wilson family has incurred and will continue to incur.

This is a very generous and kind family that is most deserving of any donations raised.

While I don’t know Connor, friends have told me he loves Northeastern Pennsylvania, so while home for a few weeks before heading to Cowboys training camp, this is a way for him to give back.

Unified Sports Group is presenting this public signing event; any questions can be sent to [email protected].

With events such as these, it’s very easy to see why the Wyoming Valley is still considered the Valley with a Heart.

People take time out of their lives to help others – whether it be special-needs children or families going through difficulties.

By stepping in and stepping up, we can all make a difference.

Kudos to Connor for taking the time to do this public signing.

Let’s hope lots of dollars are raised for these two very special causes.
