King’s College Theatre Department will open its 2024-25 season with “Lunch With Steve, a Sondheim Revue,” set for 12:20 p.m. Sept. 10, 11 and 12 in the Maffei Theatre on campus.
“I tell my students all the time that in the theater world, Shakespeare will always be number 1 and Sondheim is just behind him,” department chair Dave Reynolds said, describing the late composer Stephen Sondheim as “one of the most brilliant American artists we’ve ever had.”
“Lyrically, he’s a genius,” said Reynolds, who planned the revue as a way to get is students to appreciate the composer he has long admired.
The performances will last about 60 minutes and are timed for mid-day so that audience members might attend during their lunch hours. The show will include songs from “Into the Woods,” “Company” and other Sondheim musicals. There also will be a “Dance in the Gym” number from “West Side Story,” which will showcase students’ dancing ability.
After this production, King’s season will include “Waiting for Godot” in October and “All’s Well That Ends Well” in November.
