If you found out that humans were not alone on this Earth, would that prospect frighten you? Would you want to know, or do you prefer a lifelong mystery?
That is the age-old question that has been brought to the table since I was still learning to tie my shoes. That is also the subject matter of Stephen Spielberg’s latest summer blockbuster.
Starring Emily Blunt (“The Devil Wears Prada 2”) as an up-and-coming regional TV weatherwoman named Margaret, who one day receives a message out of the blue from a cardinal that awakens a supernatural power inside of her. One that she wasn’t aware she ever had.
Such a simple everyday encounter leads to a cat-and-mouse chase by secretive operatives who will stop at nothing to prevent undisclosed information from making it into the public’s hands.
High-powered government secrets, you say? Kept from the public at large? Oh god no, that could never be (insert eye roll).
“Disclosure Day” is being considered the acclaimed director’s return to form after a decade or two of more sleeper releases. This spry, supernatural alien encounter is thrilling and powered by its intense A-list cast, also including a stellar Colman Domingo (“Four Seasons” TV show).
The narrative in this money-maker concerning alien encounters is nothing fresh or new for Hollywood and beyond, but “Disclosure Day” still has a way of feeling authentically cool. Emily Blunt gives yet another award-caliber performance here, really capitalizing on the depth of her craft.
The moral of what this film reminded me most is: One need not see something in order to believe in it.
