Members of the Order of Alhambra, local caravan Alhamar No. 4, recently volunteered their time at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Polish Picnic in Dupont. Alhamar members also had an information table at the event, and two raffle prizes were offered. The Theater at North donated two complimentary admission tickets to “A Man Named Cash,” and Sight & Sound Theaters donated two tickets to “Joshua,” all of which were raffled off at the end of the evening.
The Order of Alhambra was founded in 1904, and Alhamar Caravan No. 4 just celebrated its 120th anniversary in June. Each year, the Order provides scholarships to educate undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students studying to become special education teachers.
Alhamar Caravan No. 4, with a grant from the Order, was able to send four special needs children to Camp Orchard Hill this summer.
The Order is open to Catholic men and women aged 18 and older who are in good standing with a local Catholic parish. The main objectives of the Order of Alhambra are sociability, assistance to people with intellectual disabilities and the identification, preservation and commemoration of Catholic historical places, events and persons.
The group provides activities and support for children and adults with special needs by hosting dinner dances, Penguins hockey games and, most recently, an all-day train excursion from Pittston to Jim Thorpe.
Their largest local event is the annual festival for the intellectually disabled, set for Aug. 16. Alhamar No. 4 is seeking high school and college volunteers for their upcoming festival on August 16; service hours can be earned.
